How to Prepare for a Technology Assessment
Start with the business questions
A technology assessment is more useful when it begins with the way your business operates. Before an assessment, identify the outcomes you want to improve, the work that takes too much time and the decisions that require clearer information.
Information to gather before the assessment
- A short description of your services, customers and core workflows
- The systems, software and digital tools currently in use
- Known process issues, duplicate work or reporting gaps
- Upcoming projects, vendor decisions or website initiatives
- Questions about data, access, reliability, cost or scalability
Involve the people closest to the work
Team members who use a process every day can often identify practical issues that are not visible in a system inventory. Ask what slows work down, what information is difficult to find and where handoffs or approvals become unclear.
Set priorities, not just a wish list
Separate immediate operational needs from longer-term improvements. A focused assessment should help a business understand what needs attention first, what information is still needed and which decisions can wait until the right scope and resources are available.
What happens after the assessment
Depending on the agreed engagement, the next step may be recommendations, a technology roadmap, project planning or a discussion about implementation support. The appropriate path should reflect your business goals and the findings of the assessment.
